Forever 21: Glasgow Launch

Last weekend I returned to Glasgow for the launch of Forever 21 in the new Buchanan Quarter. It created an incredible sight, as huge queues formed down Buchanan Street in the midst of a snow storm. I snapped style in the store for most of the day and was even treated to some live music by songstress Nina Nesbitt.

Fantastic Man: Buttoned-Up

 photo buttonedup.jpg

Having enjoyed the appearance of a tie-less button-down Oxford cloth shirt for some time now, I was instantly drawn to the Penguin Book by Fantastic Man titles"Buttoned-Up". Written as part of the Underground Lines series to celebrate the 150th anniversary of this tube, this book represents 'The East London Line', often referred to as the Ginger Line or Overground. In effect: Shoreditch, Dalston, Fashion, Hipsters.

It's interesting to read a reflection of cultural circumstances as they occur as it's rarely right on the money, but with a superb fashion analysis by Alexander Fury and interview with Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant it's hard to go wrong. Anything touched by Gert & Jop from Fantastic Man seems to have an air of quality, a considered approach that I'm drawn to. As I needed some light reading on the train back from Glasgow to London last weekend, I decided to buy. My decision was solidified ten-fold by the opening story:

"Patrick's school uniform in rural Scotland was a white shirt and V-neck jumper, no tie. He says the boys would wear their shirts one button open and the girls maybe one more. Just teenagers, loosening up. When he was sixteen he happened upon a picture in a magazine of Orange Juice guitarist James Kirk. 'He had his shirt buttoned. I thought he looked like the coolest person in the world.'

Clearly Patrick and I lived parallel lives. Sold.

Buttoned-Up is available here.

My Canvas Journey Exhibition: Hoxton Gallery

 photo mycanvasjourneygalleryexhibition.jpg

Last month I participated in the Converse #MyCanvasJourney project. 15 London creatives Instagrammed their life through the journey of one canvas bag, culminating in an exhibition at The Hoxton Gallery in Shoreditch. Unfortunately I couldn't make the launch event as I was shooting in Glasgow but the night was an immense success - a huge congratulations to all involved.

My favourite image from the project was of Macks on Curtain Road - a participant of my other project, '100 Beards, 100 Days'. Follow me on Instagram @GarconJon to see more of my photography.

Buchanan Quarter: What Makes Glasgow's Style Great?

Last weekend, I returned to my Scottish roots and photographed style on the streets of Glasgow. As part of the Buchanan Quarter launch, I also asked citizens what they thought of their city's style - here are the results.

Ian: Candleriggs, Glasgow - Buchanan Quarter Street Style

 photo ian1slogo.jpg

This weekend I spent my days in a more than familiar place. I walked the streets of Glasgow finding the best style on offer for the launch of Buchanan Quarter - a new shopping, living and lifestyle experience in the city centre. It was bizarre being back, my first time photographing style for about 18 months, as it was so familiar yet I felt detached.

Despite the rain, I found what I expected - a range of adventurous and enthusiastic style lovers. The most notable element of Glasgow style is the city's connection with music and this can really be seen with Ian, photographed in Merchant City.

I'll be posting photos from Glasgow all week, ready for the launch of Buchanan Quarter with new stores from Forever 21, Fat Face, Paperchase and GAP this Friday 22nd.

Dent de Man SS13 Lookbook

New East London label 'Dent de Man' seems to be the name on everyone's lips at the moment. Quite a feat seeing as they've only just launched their first collection. At London Fashion Week, when spotting dapper gents wearing their eccentric printed suits, photographers (including myself) would sprint to get a shot, making sure not to miss this fashion moment. Clearly the team behind the brand are onto something.

Last month, I was honoured to be asked to shoot their first lookbook. Working alongside Ayishat Akanbi as stylist and Chris Chasseaud as Art Director we played with the imagery, to go beyond the traditional lookbook setup. After the shoot, I couldn't resist but order a suit for myself. Currently the designs are made to measure and available to order from

Reaching the end of #MyCanvasJourney

Over the past 4 weeks I've returned to Instagram to document #MyCanvasJourney for Converse. Me and 22 other London creatives were all given All Star bags and given the task of photographing them wherever we went and it's been a real pleasure to watch everyone's journey unfold. Next Thursday 14th March, we'll all be exhibiting our photographs and bags at The Hoxton Gallery, Shoreditch and best news is, everyone's invited!

If you'd like to see how we got on, send me a Tweet @GarconJon or email and I'll make sure your name is on the list. Hope to see you there.
